Why Do Nice Girls Go For Jerks?

I have gone for some really horrible guys in the past that really didn't seem like jerks at first. I think what confuses guys the most about this predicament is why girls, after realizing that the guy is in fact a jerk, stay with that guy or keep coming back to him.
Basically...I believe that when you fall in love with someone (or decide you really like them), you're falling in love with a first impression. Some guys decide to make a really good first impression to reel a girl in, and then decide to treat her however they please and hurt her.
Girls have hope, though. Girls like me see the good in most people and always hope that their jerk is just going through a phase, that the nice guy they originally met is buried under that facade. It usually isn't. But we keep hoping, and that's kinda ridiculous. It's honestly SO hard to tell the difference between a nice guy and a guy who's being nice just to get in your pants.
After so many tries, girls tend to give up and not trust even nice guys. So you have to prove to a girl that you're not a jerk. And all it really takes is consistent respect and care and usually a good sense of humor to win a girl's heart. It's not that hard...some guys just make it so. If trying to get a girl is similar to pulling teeth, then she's not worth it, no matter how pretty or cool she is. A relationship is a two-way street, and girls who aren't interested are a waste of your time.
