Child's Play

By Sarah (Living Between the Lines)

This Christmas, I got—um, shall we say, drafted—to assist with a children’s Christmas program. This particular church only has about 15 children and they’re all below the age of six. A single, childless lady in her twenties volunteered to direct the program and found a play that was age-appropriate for these children. And she has spent the last several weeks herding cats attempting to direct this play. She got all of the parents to agree to help direct traffic to the stage, and on the stage. And she recruited another young childless friend of hers to help with the sets and costumes. And then, because nobody else would, she began learning lines so that she could also—in addition to directing—be the narrator of the play.

This woman was quite possibly the bravest—or most naïve—woman I have ever met.

Because I don’t regularly attend this church, I missed all of this pre-program fun. I missed the practices and the costume-making and the set-building. I just knew I needed to be there at 10:00 on that Sunday morning, to assist. By 10:03, I was ready to jump ship!

When I walked into the dressing room at 10:00, there were 15 children and at least as many adults. The oldest boy—wearing his costume—was standing on one side of the room bellowing, “WEE! WEE! WEE! WEE! WEE! WEE! WEE! WEE! WEE!” When I finally left the room twenty-five minutes later, he still hadn’t stopped. Both of his parents had been in the room and neither said anything to him.

Life Is Funny: What Do You Want For Christmas?

By Ginny (MAD21)

When I was working as an inclusion helper in our public schools, the main student that I worked with absolutely LOVED hippos. His mom even made him the cutest little backpack that was in the shape of a purple hippo (he was three at the time, now he is 15!!). The second or third year I was with him, this song started playing on the radio.  I just about died! I had never heard of it before, but believe me, I made sure his family got a copy of it. We had a lot of really great times together. I think of them everytime I hear it.

Life Is Funny: Present Pusher and Pattycake

By Ginny (MAD21)

December is our cat KC's favorite time of year. Why you might ask? Well, our couch is moved in front of the front window where the afternoon sun shines in which makes a comfy place to stretch out while taking her afternoon nap. But not only that, we have our Christmas tree up. If she isn't on the back of the couch, she is under the tree. We even have a little ornament hanging in the center of one of the bottom branches just for her entertainment.

As is our tradition, we put up all of our Christmas decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving. And not to make anyone envious or anything, but we also have most of our Christmas shopping done, and presents wrapped. KC has spent the last week diving in and out from under the tree. And since I am the object of most of her pouncing/attacking, you can be sure that I am aware of the fact that I will be attacked any time I am walking near the tree. No claws and all in fun, of course.

What has been funny this year, however, is that KC has somehow decided that she no longer is happy with the little space that we leave for her under the tree. She is now resorting to pushing all of the presents back out from under the tree. So, several times a day I find myself having to push the few gifts we still have actually sitting under the tree back into place. I figure it just adds to her long list of things to do during the day. Maybe, eventually, she'll get tired of moving the gifts and will just settle for the space we've left her... in theory anyway. She is a cat after all.

Unfortunately, I don't have any video of KC pushing the presents out from under the tree. That would be awesome, I know, but she's too stealth about it. But here is a hilarious video that someone put together in case you feel something lacking.

Life Is Funny: NYC - Take Two

By MAD21

My hubby and I got to go spend a weekend in New York City last month. It's become somewhat of an annual event. We love going, but one weekend is about all we can handle of the craziness of that city. Last year I created a Top Ten List of the ...interesting... things that happened to us while we were there. We didn't see any boxing squirrels or people licking railings this year, but there were two very unique items that I thought I would share with you:

THE largest Pez dispenser that I have EVER seen (can you imagine the size of the candy for that??). Barbie's face was pretty scary, but I have to say that the Lucille Ball Barbie is WAY scarier (sorry, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of that one). There was also an enormous amount of scaffolding next to buildings held together by, you guessed it... DUCT TAPE. Wow. Obviously OSHA doesn't visit that city very often!
