A Few Things I Have Learned About My Heavenly Father From Being A Dad

By Kevin (Shooting the Breeze)

I love being a dad. I have three wonderful daughters. Each day is so exciting watching them grow, mature and learn. Since becoming a dad almost 11 years ago I have learned so much about God. Since becoming a dad my understanding of God has grown immensely. Here are a few things I have learned about my heavenly Father from being a dad:

1. God loves me unconditionally.

I love my girls. I want what is best for them. It breaks my heart when I see them hurt or hurting. There is nothing that my daughter’s could do that would stop me loving them. What blows me away is that my love for my girls is NOTHING in comparison to God’s love for me! There is nothing that I can do that can make God love me more or love me less. He loves me unconditionally all the time. This is such an incredible truth to try to fathom!

2. God is interested in the details of my life.

I love learning new things about my daughters. I love discovering what makes them happy. I am very interested in the details of their lives.  It is exciting to hear what is happening in their lives. It is the same with God. He loves to hear from His children. He is very interested in the details of our lives. He cares intimately about us. He is not a disconnected Father; He is involved in ALL aspects of our lives and He cares about what is happening in our lives.

3. My disobedience breaks God's heart.

Probably the hardest part of being a dad is when my children disobey me. It can be very frustrating and exasperating at times. It hurts me deeply when they willingly choose to do the opposite of what I have instructed them to do. This reality has opened my eyes to how God must feel when I disobey Him. He wants what is best for me and yet I choose to willingly disobey Him at times. I have a new appreciation for how my sin makes God feel.

If you are a dad (or a mom), what have you learned about God from being a parent?

Hi! My name is Kevin Martineau and it is a great privilege to be writing for this site. I am very excited about this opportunity. Here is a little about me: I am married (16 years this summer) and have three beautiful daughters (10, 7 and 4). I get the honour of serving God through my role as Pastor at Port Hardy Baptist Church (I have been there 7 years). I enjoy blogging, reading, photography and watching hockey.

That's so true! My boys (11 and 10) have taught me about unselfish love, and about having a purpose and a goal in mind when parenting in order to get through some tough parenting times. I love my boys..they are such good company. :)

Thanks for the reminder! God is the ultimate role model for parenting and I need to put that into practice more often.
