YOB: #16. Try To Meet Someone Famous (Part 2)
By Lara
I was rather skeptical about this item on the Year of the Birthday list when Beth suggested it. I knew from the beginning that she wanted the famous person to be Duff from Ace of Cakes. I also knew that I could not afford a cake from their store. I assuaged my skepticism by thinking we would seriously bend the definition of "famous" in order to meet the objective.
I was driving to work two mornings before Beth arrived for the much anticipated "See a Hockey Game" when I heard the local radio host interviewing Mary Alice from Ace of Cakes. They were having a bake sale at the Inner Harbor. It was open to the public. Duff would be there. PERFECT!
I started teasing Beth about a surprise. She absolutely loves Duff, and had no idea what we were going to do. I finally broke down and told her the night before. She was incredibly excited. Did I mention that she loves Duff?
We woke up that Saturday to rain. Lots and lots of rain. I was afraid that they would cancel the bake sale; however, the website had said that it was a rain or shine event.
We got there really early. They were still setting up the tents. Kate, Beth and I were decked out in wind-breakers and armed with umbrellas. The rain kept coming down harder. I was still nervous that Duff wouldn't be there.
Then the black SUVs pulled up under the tents. Camera men got out. Then Geoff and Mary Alice and DUFF! Woot! I have rarely seen Beth that excited. It was totally worth getting soaked.
Kate seems to think that this shouldn't really count as "meeting" someone famous as neither of us actually spoke to Duff or introduced ourselves. I think that being within two feet of Duff totally counts. AND Beth spoke to Mary Alice.
Beth was a little bit disappointed that she didn't win any cakes in the raffle, but it was still a lot of fun. Plus, we may be on TV. That would be neat. It was certainly something memorable.

I was less disappointed about the cake when I found out it was espresso flavored. Blech!
