The Highest Calling

Training Our Children to Love and Follow Christ

Last week, I had one of the scariest moments of my life. Nothing dangerous or extraordinary happened, but I had a moment of insight that shook me deeply. The batteries had died in one of my son's toy cars. I took a screwdriver and replaced the batteries and gave the car back to him. Five minutes later, I saw him sitting on the living room floor, car in hand. Was he playing joyfully with his newly restored favorite car? No. He had picked up my screwdriver and was "fixing" the car, just like Daddy.

Fatherhood

It seems like yesterday when my wife told me that we were expecting our first child. I was 27 years old then and I can honestly say I was elated and scared at the same time. I knew right then and there I was going to be a protector and provider for this gift from God.

In March of 1983 our daughter was born. My fatherhood began. As most new parents do, this child was given a lot of attention. We have hundreds of pictures of our daughter. From her first this to her first that, everything she did was recorded or a picture was taken.

In June of 1986 our second child was born. A boy. Somehow his first this and first that did gather the same attention as our first child. We have about half as many pictures of our son as we did our daughter. Why is that?

How Did I Get Here?

You know those cool GPS things that you can put in your car? Enter any destination and this voice will tell you exactly how to get there from where you are at the time. Wrong turn? No problem, a kind voice coming from the little box will get you back on track with a few turns this way and that. What a great feeling to have the security of always knowing where you are going!

Two Defining Characteristics of a Biblically-Minded Servant-Leader

At our School, our vision is to train up a generation of Biblically-minded servant-leaders who will lead the church and the culture toward righteousness. As we have been fleshing out, as a staff, what this means, we have focused much of our attention on two very key characteristics for our students: Wisdom and Eloquence. For years I have spoken about the importance of wisdom. Proverbs emphasizes the central importance of wisdom again and again – “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom.” - Proverbs 4:7
